ASL Grammar - Common vs. Theoretical usage
I love this brief overview of common ASL vs theoretical ASL. Meaning that sometimes we're taught some very strict grammatical rules in the classroom, which is a reaction to mis-use of ASL or overuse of English influence in ASL. But ultimately, there is so borrowing and natural use of grammatical commonalities between the two, reflected in common-use ASL. Knowing when and how to apply these similarities, or push yourself to embrace the differences, just takes time and exposure to your local ASL community dialect.

I love that most of my teachers have explained and/or explored these differences in the classroom. It's hard to help beginner learners understand the boundaries, but I feel I got the gist of what this video covers from my past studies locally, and am grateful for the flexible approach to an ever-evolving language!
